When to visit Cerritos: weather, waves, and high season
May 17, 2026
Cerritos has a coastal desert climate: warm year-round, with very little rain. The big question isn't whether the weather will be good (it almost always is), but what kind of experience you're after.
High season: November to April
This is when snowbirds from the northern US and Canada arrive, Mexican families on vacation, and surfers chasing the North swell. Pros: perfect temperatures (72-82°F), zero rain, calm sea, active social scene. Cons: higher hotel prices, reservations needed at popular restaurants, more people at the surf break.
Low / green season: July to October
Hotter (86-95°F), more humid, with brief possible rains and rarely a nearby hurricane. Pros: low prices, fewer people, very warm sea water (82-86°F), big South swell waves for intermediate and advanced surfers. Cons: some restaurants close August-September, midday heat is intense, hurricanes can disrupt plans (check the weather if traveling in September).
Best for surf
- Beginners: October to May (calmer sea, small and consistent waves).
- Intermediate/advanced: July to October (South swell, 5-8 foot waves on good days).
Best for swimming
Year-round, but the water is warmer July-October. In January-February a short wetsuit helps.
Events to consider
- Todos Santos Film Festival (January) — drives tourism 15 minutes away.
- Semana Santa / Easter Week (March/April) — beaches packed with Mexican tourism.
- Day of the Dead (November 1-2) — cultural activities in Todos Santos.
Practical summary
If you're visiting for the first time and want it all (perfect weather, restaurants open, good vibe without chaos), aim for November or March. If you're coming for serious surf or on a budget, aim for August-September and plan with flexibility.
